I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:12-14
This is true for sexuality, as it is true for any other aspect of our humanity. This is true for heterosexuals, as it is for homosexuals, bisexuals, transgender people and the like. We all must turn, with all that we are (sexuality included), in order to receive saving grace. No one is excluded from this call, and there is certainly absolutely no room for self-righteousness, because we are all—at the end of the day and to the end of time—beggars showing the other beggars where to get the bread. Only when Jesus returns shall we be perfect in our humanity; until then we keep pressing on to become like him. Sanctification and maturity is a process that culminates in the return of Jesus. Until then, we all need to live with some level of incompleteness and brokenness. None of us escape that!
The Bible doesn’t give us all the answers to the questions raised in Sharon’s story, but I do know that our God is a good God, and that one day we will understand. We will get an eternal perspective of the particular limp we walk with through this life. Just like other saints throughout history, everyone has to navigate their particular brokenness, their particular pain. The question is not whether we will experience pain. The question is whether we allow it to bring us to the foot of the cross. Whether we are willing to enter into the mystery that suffering and sanctification weave together.
